This Old Dog

by Mac Demarco.

I shared such an emotinally charged personal moment with this album on a drive from LA to San Diego, the sun bleeding across the California Coast. I love every song offfffff this album but this one has held a special place in my heart for years. I knew this song was about love but I never understood it until I met you. From Kingstons luscious keys and jazzy horns we cross into Mac Demarco’s dry vocals and warm guitar.

Verses 1 + 2 and Chorus:

The song Kingston introduces this notion of love being so intense that its scary. Its a feeling that crept up in our relationship in the last few months and one we’ve spoken about at length. As I grappled with a love so good it was scary, I realized that part of what scares me is not knowing what will happen next. I try my best to put the best version of myself out there every day. Sometimes the best version of my love can be cold. I was scared knowing that there’s always a risk of hearts changing their minds. What I’m trying to say it that love isn’t always going to be a honeymoon. Being a part of one another’s lives means experiencing each other as individuals through every emotion, our mistakes, our moments of vulnerability. The verses present these ideas of why love can sometimes be scary due to the unexpected nature of life. However, the chorus comes in to reasure you that I’m not going to forget the moments we’ve shared and what you mean to me.

Other things that standout to me: the beautifully simple synths that melt their way across the chorus juxtaposed with the analog warmth of the guitar guiding us in the verses. I also love that Mac refers to himself as ‘this old dog’ as it plays a larger role in the themes of the album. When I say I got that dog in me, this emotional old dog is the dog in question.

Verse 1:

Sometimes my love may be put on hold

Sometimes my heart may seem awful cold

These times come and these times go

As long as I live, all you need to know is

Chorus:

This old dog ain't about to forget

All we've had

And all that's next

'Long as my heart's beating in my chest

This old dog ain't about to forget

Verse 2:

Often a heart tends to change its mind

A new day decides on a new design

A new day gets set on another way

Chorus:

As long as I live, all I've got to say is

This old dog ain't about to forget

All we've had

And all that's next

'Long as my heart's beating in my chest

This old dog ain't about to forget
